Comments | Surface conditions exceeded my expectations, but once again their conditions report had some outright lies. Night before report and SnoCountry filing stated all lifts, including Outpost would be open. Not true. Little Pico Triple was closed to the public (big racers only sign) and the Outpost chairlift and associated trails were all closed. Little Pico and Outpost may not be the biggest pods, but some of the best terrain on the mountain is there. Bushwhacker was apparently groomed all the way, but was closed (even the stretch between C Slope and Pike, which looked good). I don't get it. The good news is that there's snowmaking underway on Prospector, That A Way, and Outpost Run, so perhaps that complex will nominally open before the holiday week. Summit Quad (I don't know why they bother to scan tickets up here; the extra scanner is needed on Golden Express, which you have to take to even get here). 49er is now wall to wall and was beautiful packed powder the first half of the morning. A little choppy at lunch time from all of the traffic. Upper Pike to Mid Pike has about 2 to 3 cat tracks wide of manmade, but was scratchy with random holes and death cookies. Upper KA is open (listed as closed), but basically survival skiing with large, awkward snowmaking whales. Ironically, Mid KA is listed as open and groomed, but is actually closed with untouched whales. Sunset 71 was technically open, but looked to be about 6 feet wide of natural. Upper Giant Killer looked similar. Did not venture onto Summit Glades based upon what I could see adjacent. Sunset Schuss to C Slope, Birch Glade, and Lower Giant Killer were open with tracked and untracked powder and grass sticking up. Caution for waterbars on Lower Giant Killer. Golden Express Quad (stopping way too frequently and unncessarily). Fools Gold and Panhandler skied well. Gold Rush was okay, with some dirt poking through on one part. Expressway had some random ice bulges and dirt/open water. Prospector was open, but not worth it, as some guns were spraying water/ice. Knomes Knoll. Ace of Clubs was good and uncrowded. Triple Slope was also good, and untracked powder could still be found. Overall, I'd say there was about 3-6" of powder visible from the recent storm. Summit Quad was ski-on all morning, while Knomes Knoll was only a few chair wait. Golden Express was a few minutes, in part due to all of the stops and because the one ticket scanner could keep up with the crowd. Cold weather with some breaks of sun, as well as a snow squall around lunch time. Main parking lot nearly full before 1 PM. | |
