Comments CommentsHard to put a shine on this sneaker. Yesterday's warm temperatures did a number on the snowpack. Additionally, they kept the anticipated "late spring" trails closed. In other words, there was no way to get down without going across narrow, thin rock-strewn stretches. Even with rock skis (which I stupidly didn't bring), I would have felt bad. The snow report claims that more than half the trails were open, but that is not true. And the ones that were open this morning were on their last legs.

I did not venture over to Ram's Head (on its own maybe there was a good way down, but the only connector was along the Vale access road, which was pretty brown a week ago) or Bear (the runout to the base area was already brown when I checked the cams at sunrise).

Skye Peak complex had one or two snowcat passes and lots of brown and random rocks.

K1 was okay from the top, so long as you hooked toward Canyon (Blue Heaven on its last leg).

North Ridge was thin with numerous chokepoints except for Upper East Fall. Can't imagine Rime or Great Northern (from Rime down) will survive the week. Powerline/Upper Ridge Run are done.

Canyon chair was running, but there was no way to get to it, as all trails leading to it were closed! Cascade headwall is bare/done. Downdraft was ungroomed, so closed. Double Dipper was listed as open/groomed initially, but when they finished cat work around 8:30, they didn't groom, and parked the cats blocking it off at Great Northern, so it remained closed. Lower East Fall was briefly open (ungroomed), but patrol soon closed it. Looks like Downdraft/Double Dipper/Lower East Fall will live to see another day, but I can't imagine they'll survive beyond the anticipated K1 seasonal closing.

Snowdon was not great. Great Northern had a number of narrow, thin spots just barely pieced together with rocks and dirty slush. Lower Bunny Buster also had issues. Lower Chute, Lower Caper, and Frolic are all done. Killink from the top has modest snow, but I can't imagine it'll be around when K1 closes for the season (Snowdon Triple reportedly being the late season access point to the upper mountain).

Glad I brought some apres-ski gear, because this would have been a wasted trip. I was originally planning to go to Sunday River, but followed my gut with the wind forecast (and sure enough, the entire area was on wind hold).

Hopefully there are a few more weekends left in the season, but it's going quickly at this point!
