Comments | Woke up early and drove up to Berkshire East on this very cold but snowy MLK Day. Got there before open and was on the lift shortly after first chair. It got busy by Berkshire East standards fairly quickly, but still was not particularly bad. The longest I waited, excluding lift stops, was maybe 6-7 minutes for the high speed lift. For a bluebird powder MLK day, not bad at all. My early effort was rewarded with powder runs down UMass, Flying Cloud, and the side of Competition before stuff inevitably began getting tracked out. After the first hour or so, Grizzly and UMass were powder bumps on top of a sheet of ice, and not particularly fun. Flying Cloud stayed a little better further down. For the groomers. Competition stayed good all day long, even on the ungroomed sides. Packed powder down the middle especially on lower comp. Upper was great early, got a little scraped off, but still doable. Big Chief had a lot of good side hits and got a little scratchy, but was nice to carve on. Mohawk and Bolt were both good soft packed powder with powder on the sides. War Dance and Minnie Dole were both fun to rip, part of War Dance was ungroomed as well. Ralicki's Run was absurdly icy, couldn't get an edge at all. Avoided it after second run. Only made it over to Exhibition-side once, but snow was being made on Hemlock and Exhibition was fine, but nothing special. There were some questionable rope drops today. Most people quickly figured out that the glades weren't worth it, but they opened Upper Liftline and Chute on natural, the latter of which was absolutely a mistake. I tried it thinking it might have a snowmaking base, nope, rocks and sticks all the way down. Got more than a few scratches off it and I'm not thrilled. Stayed from opening bell until about 3:30, got 23 runs and over 21k vertical in. Just a beautiful day to ski. | |
