Comments | Starting off with an Indy Pass gripe - for the second year in a row, I've been forced to buy the physical Indy/Entabeni RFID card, yet it doesn't actually work anywhere. Even though Indy/Entabeni owns Black, they are requiring you to buy a separate Black Mountain/Entabeni RFID for $5 in order to redeem an Indy day. Not only that, but the redemption process is super cumbersome - first they have to go through the process of redeeming the Indy ticket, then they force you to take a photo, give them your contact information, date of birth, etc. I MUCH prefer the simple wicket ticket Black had for decades to this Rube Goldberg setup. Anyway, Black is open with probably their best snowmaking performance ever, blowing away the last few seasons. For now there is one top-to-bottom run (Maple Slalom to Speedwell to Jubilee). There are a few minor variations around Lostbo Cabin, but otherwise it's just that one way down. The top and bottom were in good shape, but the Speedwell portion was littered with golf balls. I suspect this will improve with subsequent grooms. Snowpack on the open run is decent and should withstand a warmup. Snowguns are currently running on Jubilee, the J-Bar slope, the Platter lift line, and the base area (including the base of the triple). I didn't see any signs of any additional upper mountain trail seeing snowmaking yet, so I suspect today's offering will be the same tomorrow and possibly for a little while thereafter. Despite the warning that lift ticket sales would be limited today, there were very few skiers. I'd guess that the worker to skier ratio was 5:1 (or greater). It was pretty much a private ski area this morning. The blasting on Upper Maple Slalom didn't visibly harm the trail. Lots of clearing at the top, opening up a massive Presidential view. Most of the base area buildings have been painted Entabeni red, as have some interior areas. The fancy new Entabeni luxury SUV, RV, etc. seem out of place for what Black has long been, but it's good to see it operating. | |
