Comments CommentsUsed my first Indy Pass day of the season at Waterville Valley yesterday. I was a little worried that they wouldn’t have much terrain open due to the recent weather, but was very pleased to read on the report that they were reopening all trails that were open prior to their 3-day-long closure.

The snow report advertised 33 trails open and the most open terrain in New Hampshire, though some of the trails (Treeline, Upper Hassle, Periphery, most of Psyched) that were marked as open were in fact closed. Upper Sel’s Choice and Tommy’s World Cup Run were closed for the first few hours (despite being listed as “open” in the report) and then opened around 10:45 along with the section of The Chute right above the steep pitch. Tecumseh Express, Valley Run, High Country, Lower Meadows, and the Lower Pasture carpet were running with no lift lines apart from an occasional wait of a few chairs at the Tecumseh Express.

Snow conditions were generally frozen granular, though loose granular, hardpack, golf balls, bulletproof and grippy machine-made packed powder could also be found. Stillness, Valley Run, Oblivion, Upper Bobby’s Run, Utter Abandon, Sel’s Choice, Tommy’s World Cup Run all saw snowmaking at some point in the day. Because of this, visibility was sometimes tough on these trails, not to mention you got encrusted in ice. The best snow was on Oblivion and on a section of Upper Sel’s Choice that had snowmaking on it for most of the day, though the pitches immediately above and below were golf balls. No Grit was my ROTD as it was in the sun most of the day so it softened nicely despite no snowmaking running on it. Stillness was re-groomed around 11:45, which improved its conditions a lot.

Despite the mediocre conditions, I was still glad to be skiing rather than sitting at home thinking about skiing. Hope we get some more natural snow in the forecast soon.
