Comments | Wow, today was just one of those days that only happens once or twice a season! There was no packed parking lots, no $100 lift tickets, no waiting in line to get on the chair, no racing other people to get to a trail before it gets tracked out, no crowds of any sort, just fresh and deep powder at a great unpretentious ski area.
After a very treacherous drive, which took an hour longer than normal, we arrived at Hermon Mountain to find it 100% open with some of the deepest powder we've seen all year. It was hard to estimate exactly how deep it was, but it was deep enough to feel bottomless in most areas. It also snowed all day long, just adding to the already amazing conditions, and providing free refills. The mountain wasn't crowded at all, and there was rarely a wait to get on the chairlift. I spent most of the day on the blacks and double blacks, which had many drops and jumps that were skiing amazingly.
For those who aren't familiar with Hermon Mountain, it is a fun independent mountain located just outside of Bangor. The mountain has lots of great novice and intermediate cruising terrain, and at least as much expert terrain. The expert trails are much more challenging than you'd expect for a mountain the size of Hermon, and they have legitimate steeps, cliff drops, and double fall lines. Today was truly one of the best ski days in the past few seasons, and Hermon was the perfect place to spend it at! |
