Comments | it seemed like winter again yesterday at Bretton Woods for their last day of the season! When we arrived it was in the low 20s and it only got colder throughout the day. The skies were overcast with some breaks of sun, there were flurries throughout the day, and it was VERY windy! In the Latitude 44 lodge the "High Wind Alarm" kept going off; showing sustained winds at almost 20 mph with gusts well above 40 mph. One gust at the very end of the day was so strong that it blew all of the doors on the lodge open and knocked all of the skis off the racks and sliding across the base area! However, the skiing was great. They had the Learning Center Quad, the Zephyr Express Quad, and the Bethlehem Express quad open. There were 2 routes down from the Zephyr (Avalon & Range View) and about 5 routes down from the Bethlehem (Ben, Bretton's Wood, Sawyer's Swoop, Water Tank, & Deception Bowl). Conditions were good on open trails with few bare patches. The snow was fast granular with some ice patches and a thin layer of new snow on top. Crowds were very minimal and lifts were ski-on all day. The Bethlehem Express was shut down for the final half hour of the day. Nothing official was said, but I'm guessing it was because of the wind. It was a great day of skiing although it wasn't the spring day that was expected. |
