Comments CommentsFirst day of skiing at Sunday River, and first report of the year. Here's to a great ski season!

Started out over on Locke this morning, and made my way around to all of the open lifts. The surface off of Sunday Punch and Cascade had some pretty great coverage for early season. I expected rough icy crap, but instead both were actually decently groomed. Had a lot of golf balls in some spots though. Barker rode well too, but the crowds kept me off it for awhile. Right Stuff in particular (in my opinion) had the best coverage and surface of the day. Spruce was great too, and the Chondola was also spinning although you could only take the new cutoff to the lower half of American Express. Lift ops also opened up the chair side at some point during the morning, so you wouldn't just ride the cabins all day.

While talking to some friends at Spruce, they told me about the new snowguns that lined some of the trails. Mountain ops installed an entirely new (and automated) snowmaking system on parts of North Peak and parts of Spruce. The new HKD tower guns can be turned on with a computer or tablet, and can be self operational with no crews of snowmakers w/hoses to turn them on or off. A line of guns starts at the top of the Gondola, runs through lower Downdraft (a new trail), down the lower half of American Express and Risky, and ends at the bottom of Thataway, near the Spruce triple.

Gotta say, I already love all the new gear. This will definitely help them out long-term.

Temperatures started out at around 29 degrees and got up to about 40 mid-day.
