Comments | Opening day! Berkshire East and their recently-overhauled snowmaking system tried very hard to open earlier but a series of unfortunate warm days and rainstorms pushed them back a while. It rained a bit in the morning and a moderate fog had descended upon mid-mountain by 9:30am, although the sun started to peek out by noon.
There were technically seven trails open that day but it was really just three and a half. Outback was open from the top (and arguably in decent condition given the circumstances!) and funneled into either Lower Competition, Lower Big Chief, or Lower Mohawk. Each of those runs were equally good in my opinion but good speed was to be had on Comp. The Top Notch Double and Magic Carpet were also technically open but were barely used - the Carpet operator said I was the first one to ski the beginner trail next to it that season.
Overall I'd say it wasn't worth it for anything besides the clout of skiing opening day, which I was fine with. Conditions got better with more favorable weather but Berkshire East definitely faced challenges with snowfall this season. I'm also very interested in their proposed expansion on the north side of the mountain but I haven't heard a lot about it recently. |
