Comments | Nice casual Wednesday here at Sunday River. Had some time off this week, and decided to ski here on my day off. Wind was in the forecast for today, and kept the gondi and White Heat closed for the first half of the day. For what it's worth, Sunday River is in pretty good shape with the trails it already has. The freeze-thaw cycle is really helping them at night, as it gets cold enough so they can get to any trail without damaging any surface when it gets warm. Only downside is that it's only firm in the morning. Started out at South Ridge lodge, and made my way over to Spruce. Risky had some pretty decent leveled surfaces down below, but American Express had it all. Because there was no traffic off of the gondi, the lower half of American Express was absolutely fantastic and was not skied off at all in the morning, and even in the late afternoon. Even surfaces on the top and bottom made it the run of the day. Important thing to note is that Jordan Bowl is now closed for the rest of the season, as of March 27th. Mountain Ops are already starting construction for their new 8-person bubble set to go in for 2022/23. This closes a pretty sizeable chunk of their groomed terrain, so the eastern half of their resort is their main focus in terms of snow quality. With this in mind, I mainly stayed over at the Barker and South Ridge for the day. I did venture over to Aurora to check out the construction and was pretty surprised to see that they already removed the chairs and parts of the terminals of off the Jordan quad. There was a big excavator blocking the Kansas trail, and snow was pushed off to the side of it too. Pretty impressive. After taking Northern Lights down, made my way back to Barker Mountain. Took multiple laps on Right Stuff, Ecstasy, Sunday Punch, Lazy River and Cascades. Punch was a bit icy in some spots above the lift line, but generally speaking all trails were in great shape surface wise. Snow just gripped to your skis as you made edges. After checking out Barker, headed over to Little White Cap, then up to White Heat. Opened up at around 11:50?? Don't actually remember the time when it opened. The Heat was a bit granular near the top, but softened up throughout the day. Obsession rode well too, albeit with some rocks near the intersection of Salvation. Took some laps on the T-Bar as well. Since I work at Lift Ops here, most of them recognized me from when it ran yesterday while everything was on wind hold. They also speed it up when the public is not using it, (3 1/2 m/s), so it was going much faster today than yesterday. Only reason why I ride it is so I can lap the Boardercross course. Got in a solid 7 laps in total off of it! The double-jumps and turns were really fast and fun. Also noticed 2 groups of out-of-state race teams training, 1 from Quebec and the other from Stratton. Called it a day at 3:00, with 36 runs in total. | |
