Comments | With weird weather and concerns of wind holds and crowds, Black Mountain of Maine seemed like a good choice. newenglandskier13's recent posts were very helpful! Fantastic day of skiing. Apparently this was busy for Black Mountain standards, but there was never more than a few chair wait, nor any crowded trails. Androscoggin/Rapids/Sunday and a few subsidiary trails connected to those (such as Swift and Kennebec) had man made bases and were groomed with good packed powder surfaces. Even with the wind whipping, those trails were still skiing decently in the afternoon. The Piscataquis-Penobscot-Kennebago run was all natural. The top was getting a little thin late in the day (from traffic and wind) and there were a couple of obstacles down low, but otherwise it was nice powder/packed powder. Allagash and St. John were open and had been rolled prior to the storm, but still have plenty of thin spots (some rock and some blue ice). Snowmaking has made its way up lower Allagash, so presumably there will be better base over there soon. The very bottom (if you don't cut over to Rapid) was gnarly in one spot with some blue ice, but otherwise okay. Allagash is one of the nicest cruisers in the state. Skied Lazy River for the first time. Narrow and steep in some spots and plenty of powder (a good foot plus). Cambridge Dead/Webb/Rangeley was a nice area of powder, even in the afternoon. Narrow entrance and (if you stay right) exit, with a big wide slope in the middle with good pitch. Magalloway was also natural with untracked powder in the afternoon. After lunch, we hiked up Moxie twice. It's just under 10 minutes to get to the start of Upper Bagaduce. A lot of Bagaduce and Saco had been tracked out by utility cats prior to the storm, so there was some base. That said, since it's side country, there were still some rocks to keep an eye out for, but nothing too bad. Wesserunsett looked kind of brushy from the bottom (perhaps another foot or two of snow will cover up the puckerbrush), so we passed on that. We also skipped the Saco headwall, as the bottom looked a little dicey (couldn't tell if they were snow covered stumps or something) from afar, but the Bagaduce pitch skied very nicely with plenty of powder. Both trails have a lot of character, unique views (up to Saddleback), and make the mountain feel very big. Pretty much everything from the ski area to these trails looked in bounds for tree skiing, and a lot of folks were taking advantage of it (but still plenty of untracked powder in the afternoon). Really fun day. This area skis big, yet has a down-to-earth vibe. Great to have everything open and uncrowded, particularly when seeing Sunday River's snow report showing most of that mountain on wind hold. | |
