Comments | Holiday crowd avoidance brought me to Mt. Abram; the $55 retail price seemed fairly reasonable considering the alternative of paying a lot more to wait in long lines. Two trails had man-made coverage on the main mountain - Boris Badenov (race training in the morning on the side down low; not much of an impact and no large ruts after) and Dudley Do-Right. Both had decent coverage and good conditions, even by early afternoon. That said, the only access to them was Sweeper, which was getting scraped in places by lunch time. Connecting from the main mountain to the west side with man-made coverage was Taylor's Treat; the return (Lower Easy Rider to Gidney's Gulch) was still natural (thin cover with exposed waterbars, blades of grass, and some rocks; not an issue with rock skis). The two ways down the west side with man-made coverage were Egomaineah and Mahoosuc Meadow. Egomaineah had a really firm base (hard to sink an edge) but fortunately some packed powder/loose granular on top. Mahoosuc Meadow had a nice surface. Looks like snowmaking has started on Roundabout. What was really nice was that many natural trails were open (with thin cover signs). Lallypalooza up top was just about toast, but the mid-mountain intermediate trails were still skiable with care with powder/packed powder around the thin spots. Options included Peabody's Pass, Maybelle, Chicken Chute, Presto, Polka Dot, and Skyline Drive. The rest of the trails were closed. Skyline Drive was bittersweet, as only a narrow portion on the side was skiable, since the bulk of the trail is now large mountain bike berms (going to take a lot more snow to make that skiable). Polka Dot did have an open waterbar that needed care to get around. The summit chair (Way Back Machine) line was generally a minute or so. The west (Skyline) chair was much busier, with lines closer to 5 minutes. Lots of families out and about. Noted that the Maine T was recently painted (Ts not yet put back on the line). The chairlifts are looking tired and could use some TLC. Morning was partly sunny. I think temperatures dipped below freezing overnight and never got out of the 30s today, so the surfaces never transitioned to spring snow. Appreciated the mask optional nature of the lodge. The guest experience so much better when you can see employee faces! Look forward to returning again when the natural snowpack builds, as Mt. Abram has some fun expert terrain when everything's open. | |
