Comments CommentsApril skiing in late December. Glad they had all available trails open, but also glad I had rock skis - very thin in a lot of places! Thankful for the 12/28/21 post on NewEnglandSkiConditions; the BerkshireEast.com report is hard to understand.

Different opening strategy than in the past (not sure if this was by design or if there was a system issue; noted a welding rig parked at the summit). In the old days, it would be Big Chief and Lower Comp, plus Top Notch, usually built up a few feet deep before expanding. This time, they opted to open Outback to Deer Run to intermediate lower mountain offerings, adding upper Big Chief later, and not building anything too deep. This present weather pattern may put a fly in the ointment with regard to that strategy.

Three trails on the top quarter of the mountain (Outback, upper-upper Big Chief, upper-upper Mohawk), combining to two (Deer Run, Big Chief), splitting to five on the lower mountain (War Dance, Competition, Lower Flying Cloud, Lower Big Chief, Lower Mohawk). All had thin spots (grass, dirt/rocks from mountain bike trail crossings), but were also technically wall to wall. Tough choke point at the top of Deer Run/War Dance, that I don't think they'll be able to put together too many more times (lots of dirt wearing through). The ground is not frozen and there's a lot of moisture on the hill, so things are melting. That said, there was no ice, and the snow itself was nice spring snow (apart from the dirty snow areas).

Top Notch, Danny's Run, and the very bottom of Exhibition, were all served by the little chair.

Outback was a little congested at times (the only way to access War Dance/Lower Comp (race training)/Flying Cloud), but otherwise the trails weren't busy at all. The summit quad was running, but had a few multi-minute stops, as it seems like they were having issues with the loading carpet. There are only two RFID gates, so things occasionally backed up briefly there, but other than the stops or occasional user error on the gates, the lift lines were probably a minute, in constant motion.

Cloudy morning with occasional undercast, with the sun occasionally breaking through before lunchtime. Though the thin spots were sad to see, it was great avoiding holiday week crowds. Look forward to returning later this season once they finally get a good window of snowmaking.
