Comments CommentsIt was a very icy day at Sunapee today! There were about 50 trails open and they were all trails with manmade snow. It was clear most of the day with temperatures in the 20s. When they day started the trails were nicely groomed with only a few patches of ice, but it didn't take long for much more ice to show itself. Most trails were extremely icy by the end of the day especially Lynx and Blast-Off. The moguls on Flying Goose had a very thin dusting of snow on top of solid ice. While riding up the North Peak Triple I witnessed a skier lose control about 1/3 of the way down the moguls and slide down about 300 vertical feet picking up speed throughout the moguls and being launched off each on like a jump. The skier didn't stop sliding until after exiting the mogul field. On the very next ride up the chairlift, while the first skier was still being helped by ski patrol the exact same thing happened to another skier. This time the skis rocketed down the slope like projectiles. At one point there were about 5 active incidents on that one trail and it was shut down for about 45 minutes until ski patrol could clear all of the fallen skiers and various equipment scattered around the trail. It was a crazy day for sure! Lift lines were not bad on most lifts, but the Clipper Ship Quad and Sunapee Express Quad had longer line up to 10 minutes long. I'm off to Jay Peak tomorrow and I expect more of the same ice. It was still a great day for anyone with sharp edges!
