Comments | Today I spent the evening skiing at Hermon Mountain near Bangor for the second time this season. Booting up in the lodge and using cubbies felt weird, even though I would be doing it regularly in a normal year. It was definitely a welcome change from booting up in the car. It was perfect weather for skiing with clear skies and temperatures around 30. I was impressed with the snow conditions because even after the recent warm weather, all snowmaking and night skiing trails were open with wall-to-wall coverage. They were all groomed to perfection with not a thin spot in sight on the open trails. Their classic 1969 Stadeli double is one of my favorite lifts around. It's a very smooth ride and the keep it well maintained. It's also a visually appealing lift with black chairs contrasting against off-white, almost mint colored towers. There are a few unique things about the lift. First, it seems to have three speeds besides stopped, fast, slow, and extremely slow. The other is that most chairs have trail maps on their safety bars, which is a nice little detail that you don't see often. As with other Stadelis I've ridden, I believe the distance between the uphill and downhill sides of the haul rope gets slightly less near the drive and return bullwheels. Can anyone confirm or deny this for sure? Hermon remains one of my favorite small mountains and I always think of it as a mini Mount Abram. It's affordable, has a great atmosphere, and has a great variety of terrain, especially when there's abundant natural snow. | |
