Comments | Snowpack survived last week's weather, but the surface conditions not so much. Dust on crust. With most of the mountain on hold yesterday, I don't think they groomed much of anything last night except for Lower White Cap. As a result, conditions were worse than expected (a second groom after the weather would have helped things). Initially most upper mountain lifts were on wind hold (seemed like more of an operational hold), but by about 9, everything that was going to open was open. Oz and Jordan were closed all day, even the trails leading in there (even with the double operating; I suspect it may have been an ice hold). Barker was not that great. Dust on crust or else ice, never consistent. You might lay an edge and have it hold, then give a second later. Top Gun and Agony closed. Returned to White Cap when that lift started. White Heat was firm, but perhaps the most consistent non-crossover on the mountain. Had a nice run down it, but did not attempt it when I returned in the afternoon due to the shadow. Obsession had quite a few blue ice patches, while Salvation was mediocre at best. Lower White Cap, the only complex open all day yesterday due to the wind and I suspect the only complex groomed overnight, skied well. All trails were open/recently groomed. Tempest complex was firm, with the steeps getting scraped pretty quickly. Especially in these conditions, Bear Paw is not a green circle. Only skied one run off Locke, as Monday Mourning was closed for racing. T2 was nasty boilerplate that didn't want to support an edge. Spruce Peak was the worst skiing at the mountain. Portions of American Express and Risky Business were downright dangerous, as co-mingling traffic would pick up speed, then happen upon one of the extended stretches of ice (including water ice bulges). Almost got taken out by someone unable to set an edge to turn well above me. Aurora was also quite nasty in places, particularly higher up. Vortex was dust on crust. Stretches of ice and boilerplate on Airglow and Northern Lights. The "easy" trails, particularly Sensation, were solid ice/boilerplate. North Peak was decent if you stuck to the terrain park trails, as it seems like they worked harder to till up some granular on those. I felt sorry for the novices on Dream Maker, as it was a slick nightmare. Did not ski much in the South Ridge complex, as the lift lines were pretty large at times (made it through the South Ridge singles line in a minute or two, but never bothered with the Chondola). All of the gondola cabins were parked, so the chondola was instead a low capacity 6 pack (with the gaps on the line). Chilly temps but not overly windy. Blue sky all day. | |
