Comments | I had never skied in October before, so this fall seemed like a good opportunity. Though there was an advertised 9 AM opening, the North Ridge Triple was on ice hold (from snowmaking), so they didn't start loading the K1 (old cabins still on) until around 9:45. Staircase still needed to descend to and ascend from the open terrain, though snowmaking has started on Great Northern (when open, this will allow one to ski down from the summit, but will still require a hike back up at the end of the day). Top to bottom snowmaking in progress on Superstar...not enough snow on it to be open, but regardless it won't open to the public until after the World Cup race. There were two runs open in the North Ridge area - Rime top to bottom and Reason to East Fall. Wet snowmaking was in progress on both trails, but there was nearly wall to wall coverage. Base depths were probably 1-2 feet. The upper half was packed powder/loose granular (trails had been groomed prior to opening), however the lower half had stop-in-your-tracks wet slush under the snow guns. Never more than a few chair wait. Trails were starting to get crowded with wreckless snowboarders around 11:30, so I decided it was time to go. Good conditions considering the time of the year. | |
