Comments | I finally got the opportunity to ski closing day at Killington! I arrived shortly after 8:00 and moguls had not yet formed when I got on the slopes. At the start of the day, it was possible to ski the headwall, but there were rocks which were impossible to avoid, and as the day wore on, almost all snow on the headwall melted away. After skiing the headwall once, I hiked down the muddy headwall for every other run. The upper part of Superstar had great cover and still deep base depths. About half way down, was a choke-point which became a gap later in the day, but removing skis was not needed. A little further down was another choke-point which had been worked by the snowcat. This had good cover at the start of the day, but as the snow got spread around, the lack of base underneath meant you often hit rocks in that section. The S-Curve was not full width, but wasn't very narrow either and was in pretty good shape. The wide last pitch also still had an excellent base. There were lots of people, but the required walking kept everyone spread out and lines were never too long even though they were only loading two per chair and running it at a slower speed because it was walk-on, walk-off. It was a great experience and they really lucked out weather-wise with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s for closing day. |
