Comments | Spring skiing was in full effect today. Berkshire East is likely on its last legs. They did a great job patching things together this week while they were closed, but bare spots and thin cover in critical areas was already showing by the end of the day. The unload of the T-Bar express was in rough shape - they had to keep shoveling snow on it all day to cover the mud, and it was a 2 foot wide path over to the junction with Outback/Mohawk. It was a little firm in the morning, but quickly softened up into spring snow, slush, mud, and puddles at the base as temps climbed from 30 into the upper 50s. Thunder had good coverage and was a good first run. Bolt and Chute were also good in that complex. Mohawk was thin to start, and the upper part of it before the intersection with Big Chief had near-totally melted by the end of the day. Big Chief was basically two trails, with a bare spot running down the middle. Flying Cloud had a bare spot up top but was good below that. Competition was thin, but had full coverage throughout the day and decent, albeit thick, snow. Grizzly was a little icy but it was warm enough it didn't matter. UMass was closed, but I skied it anyways - good corn below a big bare patch at the top. Outback had been patched together, but was more mud than snow by the afternoon. However, I needed to use it to access Hemlock, which was run of the day. Full coverage, deep base, and perfect spring corn that lasted all day long made it more than worth the trek down Outback. Wilderness Quad wasn't running, so you had to take the beginner double to get back to the main base. Still worth it. Exhibition and Roundabout were both good too. I don't think they'll make it to next weekend, so tomorrow is probably the last day. Maybe they'll prove me wrong, but there's just too many bare spots and thin coverage in critical areas. It'd take a colossal effort, but we'll see. |
