Comments | Darmouth's conditions reports have made it look like they haven't made much snow this year. The reports are sandbagging the snowmaking - they actually have multiple routes open with snowmaking off each peak, including some terrain that I haven't seen covered in years. Parking situation is different, as the roadside lot now has a guardrail separating it from the road. The upper entrance is now drop-off only and barriered from the lot. In other words, you have to drive in via a new entrance near the hiker lot and exit via a route near the snowmaking pond. Confusing, especially if you're used to the previous open concept. Started on Holts with temperatures below zero, but fortunately not a breath of wind. We ran into the race team in New York yesterday, so there was no racing or race training at Dartmouth today. Contrary to the snow report, Don Worden Schuss was groomed wall to wall and skied quite well. Worth a repeat. The typical Upper Kelton Gauntlet to John Meck to The Face was opened and nicely groomed. A surprise was that the lower half of Lyme Drop has also seen snowmaking and grooming and was quite nice. Another surprise was that they've made snow on Lower Kelton Gauntlet (I can't remember the last time I've seen this). They didn't groom it today, so it was scratchy in the middle, but there was some nice natural snow in places. Low angle naturals on Holts also skied well, but Lift Line looked very thin, as the half foot or so of natural snow is not dense. Two groomed ways down Winslow - typical Chivers to Pass Fail, and Herman's Highway. Perhaps not has deep/wide as in prior years. They've also made snow on parts of Thomas and lower Chivers, but it looks like they'll need more runtime to finish these. Lower Chivers was adventure skiing, but enough manmade base to not worry much about thin cover. Temperatures rose from sub zero to the lower teens by late morning. Lifts were generally ski-on. If they can pick up another half foot of snow and get a little more snowmaking runtime on Winslow, things should be dialed in. Nevertheless, it was still a worthwhile visit today. |
