Comments CommentsDid the Sunday afternoon deal. They were parking at the US 302 lot as the main lots were full, but I decided to check out Sunnyside and found a few spaces there. I'd been wanting to hit Shawnee/Pleasant during the daylight in recent years, but didn't want to fork over the money unless Sunnyside was open (it's closed much of the week). It feels like a throwback ski area on that side with an old-school, no-frills lodge and the upgraded Hall chairlift.

The new high speed quad was running at full speed, which gets you up the hill very quickly. Disadvantage being the trails are skied off faster. Boilerplate pretty much everywhere this afternoon with a thin layer of loose granular. In fact, the only two trails I could consistently lay down an edge on were Sunset Boulevard and East Slope. Riley's Run was probably the worst, as the last portion was almost wall to wall boilerplate with pretty much nothing floating around on top. Jack Spratt et al is homogenized after the blasting, but was still pretty scraped even with the improvements.

Almost all of the trailed terrain was open, except Upper Kanc, Lower Hagget's, T-Line, and the Sunnyside lift line. Seems like plenty of base on the open trails, though it's bulletproof at the moment. Though the temperature got just above freezing along the US 302 corridor this afternoon, it stayed cold on the mountain, in part due to a passing snow squall.

No lines for the Sunnyside Triple. The high speed quad had a line for a little while at 1PM, but otherwise was only a few chair wait. Decent crowd around the beginner areas, which is great to see. Pleasant/Shawnee certainly seems to be on the upswing.
