Comments | I wasn't expecting much on a Saturday before Christmas, but Killington overdelivered, thanks in large part due to recent small natural snowfalls (including a few inches of champagne powder last night). I parked at Bear to avoid the bustle. Both quads were running (not sure why the Bear quad was open, since you could ski everything open via the Skye Peak Express, which had no line). One a few lifts did not run - Sunrise, South Ridge, lower Skyeship, Snowshed Double, Snowdon Triple. Everything else (including upper Skyeship) was open. Snowshed/Ram's Head/Snowdon had some lines by 10 AM (not sure about K1 at that point), but everything else was pretty much ski-on. Since much of the natural terrain was open, trails were generally not too crowded. The trails with the oldest vintage manmade snow had the most boilerplate underneath. Low angle natural terrain skied well (I hit Yodeler just as they were dropping the ropes and found close to half a foot of untracked powder; upper Pipe Dream had powder if you stayed left; Old Superstar was mostly filled in). I avoided the steep naturals, as they looked (and sounded) rocky. Lower East Fall opened with large whaled adventure skiing. Probably better in a few days after it gets pushed out and groomed. Looks like Highline was next on the list and may be lit up now. Snowmaking also in progress on lower Skye Peak and reportedly down to the bottom of the Skyeship. | |
