Comments | Today, I headed over to Saddleback, as it is one of the only ski areas currently open mid-week in the area. It was a cold and blustery day, with a couple inches of new snow that we picked up overnight. Roughly 25 % of the mountain was open and most runs were a mix of loose and frozen granular conditions, with much of the new snow being blow off. Kennebago started the day on wind hold, but opened around 11:15.
Most of the open terrain were snowmaking trails that had been groomed, but there were a few natural trails open as well. These had extremely variable conditions and were mostly dust on crust. There were lots of bare patches, hidden obstacles, and open water bars. However, a few, such as Colonel Bates and Lower Professor, skied quite well. There were also quite a few trails, especially in the South Branch area that were marked as closed on the trail report, but were not marked as such on the mountain. Many of these had open water bars, large bare patches, and snowmaking equipment in the trail. Normally I'm all for opening marginal trails, but most of these should have been roped off, especially in the beginner area.
Unsurprisingly, crowds were very light, and there was never a wait for any of the chairs. Interestingly, they have removed posted pricing from the cafeteria, presumably so you don't know how crazy high the prices are until you go to check out. I haven't seen that tactic before at a ski resort. All in all, it was a pretty good early season day, and I will likely be back for a late season day in April.
