Comments CommentsI'm often underwhelmed by Stratton, but today was quite the day.

Lots of groomed snowmaking runs open, including Black Bear, Polar Bear, Fall Line, Spruce, Drifter, Meadow, and Mike's, as well as lower mountain trails. A few scratchy areas on Spruce, but otherwise they were skiing well. Grizzly has been pushed out and will presumably open soon. Low angle natural trails were in good shape too, such as Upper and Lower Wanderer, and Work Road. Lift Line open, but some rocks showing. Lower Slalom Glade also open with some whales, but I don't recollect seeing manmade on the pitch (open, but looked thin in places).

The over-deliver part of the day came mid-morning, when I turned onto 91. I was expecting it to dump out onto Home Run and back to Tamarack, but alas it was open all the way to the Sun Bowl base, and the six-pack had just opened. Come to find out, they had just opened everything from Rick's Catch 22 to 91 (except for Big Ben trails, as snowmaking was just starting), all on natural. They had done single grooming passes on each trail, but everything else was a foot plus of powder. Felt like Tenney from a few years ago. One issue was that it doesn't appear that they mowed the trails this off-season, so there was a lot of pucker brush to deal with. Some areas were skied out by late morning (including a rocky area on the pitch of Rising Star), but the squares were still pretty good. Hard to believe it's the first Saturday of December!

Most lifts were running (Ursa opened late; doesn't look any different after the overhaul), and there was a good crowd, but amount of open terrain tended to distribute crowds better than can be the case early season. Cloudy with light flurries throughout the morning.
