Comments | This is Day One of my 6 day Northern New England Ski Odyssey.
I saw on the Face Book that Black Mountain would run the Historic J-Bar on Tuesday March 12th at 11:00 am, so I decided I HAD TO GO! Got there at noon, about a dozen or so people had already come and gone. Beautiful sunny skies, soft corn snow, and not much of it, but it all was soft and very enjoyable. I got compliments from a few on the hill on my circa 1995 K-2's and step turn technique on ungroomed wet snow over grass. Took a bit getting used to the fixed j-bar and there wasn't enough snow in the track but that wasn't the point. Riding a 1935 lift for the first time was all that mattered. Had a nice chat with John Fichera about the lift, the operations and business in general. I do hope this area finds a way to stay open next year. Those of you who know, know what I'm talking about. He was nice enough to let me inside to see the drive motor and mechanics of this thing. They did groom one path up an either side of the lift and you could ski down over to the double chair and back. I lapped this thing for about 2 hours, taking as many different lines down as I could because I figured this could be the only chance I ever get to ride this lift. It was a beautiful day to ski like it was like back in the early days of skiing. It was really fun!! Everyone who came seemed like they were having a great time. As for the future...???? |
