Comments CommentsYesterday I headed to my favorite Massachusetts ski area for some night skiing. Arrived just after 4:00, but there was about a 15-minute wait to pick up my RFID card (they could a few more stations at the ticket counter) and I wasn’t on the lift until around 4:50. The sunset was beautiful and the weather was pleasant, with temps falling from the low 30s to mid 20s and no wind or precipitation. After a dinner break, I skied until closing and made second-to-last chair on the T-Bar Express.

The mountain was about 60% open during the day, and all the night skiing trails were open. Conditions were mostly loose granular, with some hardpack and only a bit of exposed boilerplate. Natural snow on the sides of trails was frozen and lumpy but just barely edgeable. It seems Berkshire East lost a lot more snow over the last week or so than even the Southern VT areas; hopefully they get a good storm sooner rather than later to put their awesome natural terrain and glades back in play. Snowmaking was running last night on Hemlock, Thunder (should be ready to open soon, in fact it might have been open ungroomed during the day) and a few other spots.

The new T-Bar Express had a 2-3 minute line for most of the evening, while the Wilderness Quad and Top Notch Double only had a few-chair wait. The Summit Quad and Mountain Top Triple were closed. I enjoyed riding the new lift; despite not running at full speed and stopping a fair amount (I believe due to accidents at the unload area), I think it’s a big improvement over the fixed-grip summit lifts.
